Louis Nicholas Vauquelin discovered Beryllium by finding it in the oxide form of Beryllium, Emerald, which is a green gemstone oxidized by Beryllium.
Platinum Crucible |
Beryllium was isolated by a German Chemist and French Chemist both named Friedrich Wölhler and Antoine Bussy respectively. Together, they isolated Beryllium by using Beryllium Chloride reducing with Potassium in a Platinum Crucible, which is what the Jefferson Lab says.
However, these days, Beryllium was extracted using a method called electrolysis from the minerals Beryl and Bertrandite using molten Beryllium Chloride and Sodium Chloride, also from the Jefferson Lab's report.
Beryllium Salts taste sweet. However, it is best to be advised not to eat Beryllium can kill you. In fact, Beryllium is one of the most toxic element in the world.
Breathing Beryllium is also not advised as when Beryllium got into your lungs, your lungs will be damaged and cause pneumonia.
So, don't eat or smell Beryllium!

How Beryllium got its name?
Actually, Beryllium's Early name is Glyceynum, which is named after the Greek Word 'Glykis', meaning sweet, because of its salt ( Beryllium Salt ) is sweet. After that, Beryllium changed its name into beryllos, meaning the mineral beryl.
Uses
Beryllium is used in cellphones, spacecraft, missiles and many modern objects. Beryllium is sometimes alloyed with copper which are used for springs, electrical contacts, spot - welding electrodes and non - sparking tools. It is also said that the alloy mix of Beryllium and Aluminium will be used to make Helicopters any time now.
